OLD INDIAN PINE TREESA very large old Indian pine tree, either dead or dying of bark beetles, is pictured on the Los Coyotes Campground in March of 2006. BARK BEETLESMany old pine trees in the San Diego mountains are suffering from a plague of bark beetles infestations, including Southern California pine trees in nearby Warner Springs, Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, Julian, Santa Ysabel, the Cleveland National Forest and Mount Palomar mountain wildneress areas. The Los Coyotes Campground was closed when this picture was photographed because of heavy mountain snow and muddy roads that closed the dirt roads into this high-altitude, remote wilderness area in the San Diego mountains.
