KUMEYAAY GRINDING STONES
Ancient large granite grinding stones are a very common site in San Diego County's remote backcountry.
These large aboriginal stones were photographed in 2004 at Indian Hill, a well-known ancient tribal village site in Southern California. Experts have excavated areas of this large village site and determined the California Indians of San Diego County have lived in the Indian Hill area for over 6,000 years, since 4,000 B.C.

The earliest identified inhabitants of what is now called the County San Diego are known archaeologically as the San Dieguito Paleo-Indians. Scientific experts have tracked this group back to about 10,000 B.C. The Southern Diegueño (Tiipay) emerged from this group at about 3,000 B.C. and are the ancestors of some Kumeyaay living in this area presently.
