INDIAN RATTLESNAKE COILED BASKETWEAVINGKumeyaay basketweaver Concepcion Montes poses in front of her Kumiai home displaying one of her coiled rattlesnake juncus basket trays. This basket took two months to complete working at it full time. TECHNICAL: This was not an easy picture to pull off technically -- no ambient lighting -- what do you do with it in near total darkness to get some detail in the home interior, and use car headlights to offset the flat effect of direct camera flash? The rough exterior wall adds to the story ... I have to say I pulled it off albeit a bit grainy due to the high iso used to soak up the dim interior lighting in sync with flash intensity.
Concepcion Montes (Kumiai basket weaving ethnographic artist) takes a professional photo with her son and her latest dual-rattlesnake juncus basket tray plate in 2005 just outside her home in the San Jose de la Zorra ejido.
