RICHARD LEE BUGBEE, Luiseño
Payómkawichum
1948-2023
Richard Bugbee helped The Kumeyaay Information Village out with local Indigenous tribal perspectives on Kumeyaay cultural, ethnobotany and language references.
He initiated numerous emails to the webmaster suggesting cultural edits (corrections) and Kumeyaay word translations to add to our descriptions -- all of which were greatly appreciated. He was a generous cultural curator with his Indigenous knowledge.
Richard had the humble trait of a great teacher and mentor -- with his vast knowledge -- he made you feel like you, too, could become great as he built others up around himself.
Richard was a close cultural associate of Jane Dumas, Kumeyaay (Jamul band), and they were developing cultural projects for Sycuan's Kumeyaay Community College.
Richard Bugbee and Jane Dumas coauthored "Kumeyaay Ethnobotany Reader" a 92-page PDF (not available for download due to copyright restrictions with respect to Indigenous data sovereignty).

KUMEYAAY LANGUAGE
CULTURAL RENAISSANCE
turn of the 21st century
As Director of the Kumeyaay Community College (formerly D-Q University at Sycuan) Shirley Murphy was instrumental in the turn-of-the-century Indigenous cultural renaissance in the County of San Diego by establishing accredited language and cultural programs on the Sycuan reservation. Yuman song leaders and Native speakers from various local reservations in the region participated in her popular cultural programs as visitors, teachers and mentors.

Yuman language singers (above), Sycuan Indian Reservation, Kumeyaay Community College students and mentors, are pictured atop a mountain in this photograph around a burning campfire learning and singing some of the timeless traditional "bird songs" of their Indigenous Yuman ancestors.
